Before You Book Your Wedding Photographer, Read This.

First of all, congratulations! You're engaged!

Whether you've been dreaming about your wedding day since you were little or you're just beginning to figure out what you want your celebration to look like, this is such an exciting season of life. And if you've already started planning, you've probably realized something pretty quickly: there are a LOT of decisions to make:

The venue.

The dress.

The flowers.

The guest list.

The food.

And, of course, the photographer.

With so many talented wedding photographers out there, how do you know which one is right for you?

As a wedding photographer, I've had the privilege of documenting some truly beautiful celebrations over the years. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that choosing your wedding photographer is about so much more than finding someone who takes pretty pictures. Your wedding photographs are one of the few things you'll have long after the day itself is over.

So before you sign that contract, here are seven things I think every engaged couple should know.

1. Make Sure You Love Their Editing Style

This might seem obvious, but it's one of the most important things to consider.

Every photographer has a different artistic style. Some specialize in dark, moody images with dramatic shadows. Others create bright, airy photographs with soft, romantic tones. Some lean toward bold, vibrant colors, while others prefer a more muted, editorial look.

None of these styles is necessarily better than another. It's all about what speaks to you.

Spend some time looking through a photographer's portfolio. Pay attention to how skin tones look, how colors are represented, and whether their photographs have a consistent feel.

And here's something important: **Choose a photographer whose work you already love, rather than hoping they'll edit your wedding differently.**

Your photographs should reflect the style that made you fall in love with their work in the first place.

2. Don't Just Look at Their Instagram Highlights

Instagram is a wonderful place to discover photographers, but remember that social media is usually a collection of someone's absolute favorite images.

A gorgeous sunset portrait is beautiful, but what about the ceremony inside a dimly lit church? Or the reception when the lights are turned down? Or the getting-ready photos in a hotel room with less-than-perfect lighting?

An experienced wedding photographer should be comfortable photographing all of it.

Before booking, ask to see a complete wedding gallery.

This gives you a much better idea of what an entire wedding day looks like through their lens. Pay attention to the little moments, too. The hugs, the laughter, the happy tears, and the expressions you might not even notice happening around you. Those photographs often become some of the most treasured images from the entire day.

3. Your Photographer's Personality Matters More Than You Think

Here's something couples don't always realize when they first start planning:

You'll probably spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost any other vendor.

They'll be there while you're getting ready, when you're feeling nervous, during some of your most emotional moments, and throughout much of your celebration.

You want someone who makes you feel comfortable.

Someone who knows when to step in and offer direction, but also when to step back and let a moment unfold naturally.

Someone who can help keep things moving when the timeline gets a little behind without adding to your stress.

And most importantly, someone you genuinely enjoy being around!

Your wedding day should feel like your wedding day, not an eight-hour photo shoot.

4. Understand What's Actually Included in Your Package

Wedding photography packages can vary quite a bit, which sometimes makes comparing photographers confusing.

One photographer may offer six hours of coverage, while another includes eight or ten. Some packages include an engagement session, a second photographer, or an heirloom album.

Before making a decision, make sure you understand exactly what you're getting. Ask about the number of hours included, how your photographs will be delivered, whether you'll receive high-resolution digital images, and what happens if you need additional coverage.

It's also important to understand the payment schedule, cancellation policies, and expected delivery timeline.

The least expensive package isn't necessarily the best value, and the most expensive one isn't automatically the best fit.

What matters is finding the right combination of quality, experience, coverage, and service for your wedding day.

5. Experience Matters When Things Don't Go According to Plan

Here's a little wedding industry secret:   Almost no wedding day goes exactly according to plan.

Sometimes the weather changes unexpectedly.

Sometimes hair and makeup run late.

Sometimes a family member disappears right when it's time for family portraits.

And sometimes the beautiful outdoor ceremony you've spent months planning suddenly has to move indoors.

It happens!

An experienced photographer knows how to adjust. They understand how to work with difficult lighting, make quick decisions, and capture beautiful images even when circumstances aren't ideal. They can also help you plan a realistic photography timeline before the wedding so you're not spending your entire day rushing from one photograph to the next.

Another important question to ask your photographer is what backup equipment they bring to your wedding. As much as we'd all love to believe our professional cameras and equipment will never fail us, the reality is that technology isn't foolproof. Cameras can malfunction, lenses can stop working, and memory cards can fail; sometimes without warning. An experienced wedding photographer should always come prepared with backup cameras, lenses, and memory cards so that if something unexpected happens, they can keep photographing your day without missing a beat. After all, there are no do-overs when it comes to your wedding day!

Beautiful photographs are important, of course. But having someone who can remain calm, confident, and flexible when the unexpected happens is pretty wonderful, too.

6. Think About How You Want to Remember Your Wedding Day

When you're looking through wedding photography portfolios, it's easy to focus on the big, beautiful portraits.

And I get it. I love a romantic bride-and-groom portrait just as much as anyone!

But take a moment to think about the other photographs you'll want twenty years from now:

Your mom helping you into your dress.

Your dad seeing you for the first time.

Your grandmother smiling during the ceremony.

Your best friends laughing together on the dance floor.

The way your new spouse looked at you when you weren't paying attention.

These are the moments that tell the story of your day.

When choosing a photographer, look for someone who captures not only how a wedding looked, but also how it felt.

Because years from now, those little moments may mean more than you ever imagined.

7. Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, choosing your wedding photographer is a personal decision.

You can read every review, compare every package, and spend hours scrolling through portfolios.

But when you find someone whose work you absolutely love, whose personality puts you at ease, and whose approach feels right for you, that's worth paying attention to.

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Schedule a phone call or consultation.

Get to know the person who may be documenting one of the most important days of your life.

And remember, your wedding photographs aren't just for sharing on social media or hanging on your walls.

They're part of your love story. One day, they'll remind you of people, places, and moments you wish you could experience all over again.

Choose someone you trust to preserve those memories beautifully.

One Last Piece of Advice...

Enjoy this season.

It's so easy to get caught up in timelines, budgets, Pinterest boards, and the seemingly endless list of things that need to get done. But somewhere in the middle of all that planning, remember what the celebration is really about.

The two of you.

Your love story.

And the beginning of a whole new chapter together.

Your wedding doesn't have to be "perfect" to be beautiful. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when things don't go exactly as planned.

And those are often the moments worth remembering most.
